The NN Marathon Rotterdam returns for its 46th edition on April 11, 2027, promising another spectacular celebration of running on one of the world’s fastest marathon courses. Race Date and Schedule
The Rotterdam Marathon weekend takes place on April 10-11, 2027, with events for runners of all abilities:

Start Your Free Race Log βRegistration Information
Due to overwhelming demand, Rotterdam now uses a pre-registration lottery system for the marathon distance rather than first-come, first-served. You pre-register during a set window, and the roughly 18,000 available bibs are then randomly distributed among everyone who applied β so registration speed doesn’t matter, only luck.
Based on the 2026 cycle, the pre-registration window opens in early September the year before the race, with the random draw a day or two after it closes. Selected runners then have a short window (roughly a week) to complete registration and pay the balance. Watch nnmarathonrotterdam.nl for the exact 2027 dates.
The consolation prize is genuinely good: runners who aren’t selected in the draw are offered a guaranteed entry to another Dutch or Belgian spring marathon β Sofico Ghent Marathon, Leuven Marathon, National Park Marathon, or HiPRO Utrecht Marathon β with a discount on the lowest fee. You’re guaranteed to run a spring marathon one way or another.
Additional entry routes include:
- Super Marathon Masters: Loyalty program for runners who’ve completed Rotterdam 10+ times
- Fast Runner Invitations: Elite runners meeting qualifying time standards (recent editions have used roughly sub-2:45 for men and sub-3:15 for women)
- Charity Entries: Programs including Run Against Cancer via the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF), and KLABU, which builds sports clubhouses for refugee children
- Official Resale Platform: Monitor Rotterdam’s official platform for legitimately transferred entries
Entry Fee: Around β¬155, with a small discount for early pre-registration.
Bib Transfers: If you can’t participate, you can transfer your bib number to another runner β in recent editions the deadline has been March 31. This is a rare and welcome flexibility among major European marathons.
Why Rotterdam Is One of the World’s Fastest Marathons
Rotterdam has earned its reputation as a record-breaker’s paradise. The flat, sea-level course has witnessed three world records and countless personal bests, making it a bucket-list race for runners chasing ambitious time goals. It holds a World Athletics Gold Label and is a certified Boston Qualifier.
Historic World Records
- 1985: Carlos Lopes (Portugal) – 2:07:12 (men’s world record)
- 1988: Belayneh Dinsamo (Ethiopia) – 2:06:50 (men’s world record)
- 1998: Tegla Loroupe (Kenya) – 2:20:47 (women’s world record)
Current Course Records
- Men: 2:03:36 – Bashir Abdi (Belgium, 2021) – European record
- Women: 2:18:58 – Tiki Gelana (Ethiopia, 2012)
Between 1985 and 1998, Rotterdam held the world record longer than any other marathon. The course’s pancake-flat profile, straight roads, and typically favorable April weather create ideal conditions for fast running. Multiple runners have broken 2:05:00 here, and several of the fastest marathoners in history have set personal bests on these streets.
The Rotterdam Marathon Course
The course is a single large city loop showcasing Rotterdam’s remarkable modern architecture and maritime heritage. Starting at the Erasmus Bridge, runners head toward Kop van Zuid before touring the city’s highlights:
- Erasmus Bridge: Rotterdam’s iconic “Swan,” crossed twice β around 3km and again near 27km
- Feijenoord Stadium: Home of the famous football club
- Euromast: The city’s 185-meter observation tower
- Cube Houses: Innovative architectural landmark
- Markthal: Stunning indoor food market
- Coolsingel Finish: The grand, historic finishing straight
The course is almost entirely flat β the only meaningful climbs are the two Erasmus Bridge crossings, plus a couple of short bridge sections. Aid stations appear every 5km with water and sports drinks, supplemented by sponge stations at intermediate points.
Note on the finish: Due to ongoing construction work at Hofplein, the finish line was moved roughly 300 metres earlier on the Coolsingel, near Beursplein by the World Trade Center, starting with the 45th edition. Check the official course page closer to race day to confirm the 2027 layout.
What Makes Rotterdam Special
Unmatched Atmosphere
While Rotterdam’s speed attracts elite runners worldwide, it’s the atmosphere that makes it “de mooiste.” Hundreds of thousands of spectators line the streets, creating a continuous wall of sound and support. The Dutch know how to celebrate, transforming the marathon into a citywide festival with music, cheering sections, and infectious energy from start to finish.
Elite Competition
Rotterdam consistently attracts world-class fields. Past years have seen “Magnificent Seven” lineups with multiple sub-2:06 marathoners battling for supremacy, and the race regularly doubles as a stage for Dutch national honours.
Perfect for Personal Records
If you’re chasing a PR or qualifying for Boston, Rotterdam’s combination of flat terrain, cool spring temperatures, and organized pacing groups make it an ideal choice. The straightforward course eliminates tactical concerns, letting you focus purely on execution.
Race Weekend Logistics
Bib Collection
Collect your race packet at the Postillion WTC Rotterdam Convention Center on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday morning. This flexibility is particularly helpful for international runners arriving throughout the weekend.
Getting to Rotterdam
Rotterdam is exceptionally accessible:
- By Air: Rotterdam The Hague Airport (10km from city center) or Amsterdam Schiphol (about 1 hour by train)
- By Train: Rotterdam Centraal connects to major European cities, including direct Eurostar services. Dutch Railways typically offers discounted marathon tickets
- By Car: Free P+R parking at city boundaries during marathon weekend
Use public transport on race day, as many streets close for the marathon. The metro system serves major hotels and the start/finish areas.
Weather Expectations
Mid-April in Rotterdam typically brings mild, ideal running conditions. Expect temperatures between 10-14Β°C (50-57Β°F) with possible light winds. The maritime climate can bring rain β the 2026 edition ran under cloud with showers expected β so pack accordingly for race weekend. These moderate conditions contribute significantly to the fast times Rotterdam is known for.
One thing worth planning for: wind. Rotterdam sits near the coast in famously flat terrain, and an exposed stretch into a headwind can cost you more than any hill would. Tuck into a group if it’s breezy.
Training for Rotterdam
Targeting Rotterdam’s flat, fast course requires specific preparation:
Emphasis on Sustained Pace
Unlike hilly marathons where you surge and recover, Rotterdam rewards runners who can hold steady effort. Practice long runs at marathon pace, gradually extending your threshold capacity. The lack of hills means you’ll maintain consistent speed throughout – your training should reflect this.
Speed Development
Rotterdam’s quick nature makes it perfect for time goals, but only if you’ve built the speed to sustain your target pace. Incorporate tempo runs, threshold intervals, and progressive long runs into your 16-20 week training block. For an April 11, 2027 race, that means starting structured training around late November 2026. Many runners use Rotterdam for Boston qualification or sub-3:00/sub-4:00 attempts.
Weather Preparation
Train in conditions similar to April in the Netherlands – cool temperatures with possible wind and rain. Practice your race-day clothing choices and nutrition strategy in similar weather during long runs.
