In the first few miles you run across the Ambassador Bridge into Canada, along the Windsor waterfront with the Detroit skyline across the river — and then back into the United States through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, under the river itself. The race calls it the only official underwater international mile in the world.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon has been running since 1978 and has become one of the most in-demand races in the Midwest: it sold out for the first time in 2024, sold out by early March in 2025, and nearly 30,000 runners took part across the 2026 weekend. The 2027 race is expected on Sunday, October 17, 2027 — the race is traditionally held on the third Sunday of October — and, by the race’s own count, it will be the 50th annual edition.

Here’s everything you need to know.

🏅 Two countries, one race — log it properly

Add Detroit 2027 to RunningLog as a planned race, set your goal — a BQ, a PR, or just that underwater mile — and see it next to every race you’ve already run. Check the official site for the final October 2027 event lineup.

How to Get In

Detroit is no longer a race you can enter on a whim. It sold out for the first time in 2024, and in 2025 it was full by early March.

Registration for 2027 opens on January 1, 2027. Prices rise in tiers through the year, so entering early is both the cheapest and the safest option. For reference, 2026 pricing was:

Marathon: $120 in the first week of January, rising to $170 by the summer

Half marathons: $110 in the first week of January, rising to $160

Relay: $340, rising to $480

International events (the marathon, International Half and relay) closed registration in early September in 2026, a month earlier than the domestic races. All entries are non-refundable, but transfers and deferrals to the following year are available before the deadline.

Crossing the Border: What You Need

This is the part of the race that needs real planning.

Travel documents: You need a WHTI-compliant document to cross. A passport works; an enhanced driver’s license from Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont or Washington is also accepted. Check the requirements for your own country as well.

Admissibility: Some runners — for example, those with a DUI/OWI conviction — may be inadmissible to Canada and need approval before race day. Sort this out months in advance.

Packet pickup: International runners must collect their packets in person, with their international credentials.

No document, no Canada: If you can’t cross the border, the Motor City Half is the US-only option.

The Course

Downtown to the Ambassador Bridge

The race starts on Fort Street in downtown Detroit. The entrance to the Ambassador Bridge comes about two miles in. Traffic is restricted on race day, with a buffer lane between runners and vehicles.

The Ambassador Bridge

The climb onto the bridge is the biggest hill of the race — and the view from the top, across the Detroit River at sunrise, is the moment everyone remembers. It can be windy and exposed up there in October.

Windsor

After crossing into Canada, the course runs through Windsor along the waterfront, with views back across the river to the Detroit skyline. Canadian crowds are famously enthusiastic.

The Underwater Mile

The return to the United States is through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, closed to vehicles on race morning. It’s warm, quiet and oddly peaceful — and the climb out of the tunnel back into Detroit is short but noticeable. Expect your GPS to lose signal inside.

Detroit

Marathoners then explore Detroit’s neighbourhoods and riverfront before finishing on Woodward Avenue near Campus Martius. International Half runners head for the finish soon after the tunnel. Check the official course map for the exact route.

Racing Detroit Well

1. Don’t Race the Bridge

The bridge comes early, when you’re fresh and excited. Run it by effort, enjoy the view, and let the descent bring you back to goal pace.

2. Pace by Effort Through the Tunnel

Your GPS won’t work underground. Run by feel, and use the mile markers to check your pace when you come out.

3. Dress for the Bridge

Mid-October mornings in Detroit can be cold, and the bridge is exposed. A throwaway layer and gloves for the start are a good idea.

4. Use the Aid Stations

There are 19 fluid stations along the course, plus two GU nutrition stations for marathoners. Take advantage of them.

5. Save Something for Detroit

For marathoners, the bridge and tunnel are only the opening act. The second half through Detroit is where the race is won or lost.

How to Prepare

Training Plan

For a mid-October race, a 16-18 week marathon block starts in June — so you’ll train through the summer.

Long runs: Build to 32-35km (20-22 miles), with marathon-pace segments

Hills: Include hill repeats or bridges/overpasses in training to prepare for the Ambassador Bridge and tunnel climbs

Heat: Run early in the morning in summer and don’t worry if your pace is slower in the heat

Tune-up: A half marathon in early to mid-September

Boston Qualifying

Detroit is a Boston qualifier. With the bridge and tunnel climbs, it isn’t the flattest course, but it’s fair — and the cool October conditions help.

Race Weekend Logistics

Expo: Packet pickup is at the Kia Health & Fitness Expo before race day. International runners must pick up in person with their travel documents.

Stay downtown: The start and finish are close together downtown, which makes race morning easy.

Road closures: Much of downtown is closed on race morning, and the tunnel is closed to traffic until mid-morning.

After the race: Campus Martius hosts a free post-race celebration with food trucks, live music and awards.

After the Race

First 24 hours: Walk, eat, drink and rest

First week: No running for 3-5 days

Weeks 2-4: Gradually return to easy running

Log It While It’s Fresh

Write down your time, how the bridge felt, what the underwater mile was like and how you paced the second half.
