The Super Early Bird price of A$155 runs until 10 December 2026, after which prices rise. If you know Run Melbourne is in your plans, entering before December is the cheapest way to do it.

Run Melbourne also has a “Run for Free” option: raise money for a charity through the event’s fundraising platform and your entry is covered. If you were planning to fundraise anyway, it’s worth a look.

Why Run Melbourne?

A Landmark Tour of the City

The course is a greatest-hits tour of central Melbourne: Flinders Street Station, Fitzroy Gardens, the Yarra River, Crown, Marvel Stadium, Webb Bridge, South Wharf, Alexandra Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance and Government House. Few half marathons pack this much of a city into 21.1km.

Flat and Fast

Melbourne’s centre is flat, and so is the course. Combined with cool winter air, that makes Run Melbourne a genuine PB opportunity — if you’ve trained through the cold and dark to get there.

Big-Event Atmosphere

With more than 25,000 runners across the distances, Run Melbourne is the city’s biggest winter running event. The finish at Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open, is a fitting end.

Perfect Timing for a Spring Marathon

This is the race’s hidden strength. Run Melbourne falls six weeks before the Sydney Marathon on 29 August 2027 and about twelve weeks before the Melbourne Marathon Festival in October. For runners targeting either, it’s an ideal fitness check — or a strong goal race in its own right.

The Course

The 21.1km route starts on Batman Avenue beside the Yarra and finishes in Melbourne Park.

Start to 3km: East Along Flinders Street

The race heads east along Flinders Street and into the leafy Fitzroy Gardens. The first kilometres are busy — let the crowd and the cold settle you into a sensible pace.

3km to 10km: Through the CBD to Docklands

Back past Flinders Street Station, the course heads west along the Yarra toward Docklands, passing Crown and Marvel Stadium before crossing the river on Webb Bridge around 10km.

10km to 15km: South Wharf and the River

The route follows South Wharf Promenade and loops back toward the city through Alexandra Gardens. This is the flattest, most rhythmic part of the race — where you should be locked into goal pace.

15km to the Finish: St Kilda Road and Melbourne Park

The final section runs along St Kilda Road past the Shrine of Remembrance and Government House, then heads back toward the river and Batman Avenue before finishing at Melbourne Park. Save enough for a strong last 3km.

Cut-Off Times

7:30am: Start line closes

8:00am: 3km checkpoint (Lansdowne Street / Flinders Street)

9:15am: 10km checkpoint (Webb Bridge)

11:45am: 20km checkpoint (Batman Avenue)

The early checkpoints matter more than the final one. If you start late in the field, make sure you can reach 3km by 8:00am and 10km by 9:15am.

Racing Run Melbourne Well

1. Plan for the Dark

In mid-July, Melbourne’s sunrise is well after the 6:30am start. You’ll start in the dark and run your first kilometres on lit city streets before the sun comes up. It’s part of the experience — but plan your morning around it, and don’t let the atmosphere push you out too fast.

2. Dress for a Cold Start

Winter mornings in Melbourne are often in single digits. Wear a throwaway layer, gloves and maybe a hat to the start, and shed them once you’re warm. Most runners will be comfortable in shorts and a T-shirt or singlet once they get going.

3. Warm Up Late

Cold muscles don’t race well. Do a short, gentle warm-up close to the start time, keep your layers on as long as possible, and don’t stand around for an hour in the cold.

4. Use the Pacers

With eight pace groups from 1:25 to 2:20+, there’s a group for most goal times. On a flat course, sitting with a pacer for the first 15km and then pushing on is one of the simplest ways to run well.

5. Run the Tangents

A city course with many turns rewards runners who take the shortest line. Look ahead and cut corners where you can.

How to Prepare

Training Plan

For a mid-July race, a 10-14 week half marathon block starts in April or early May. For Australian runners, that’s an autumn build into a winter race.

Long runs: Build to 18-22km, with goal-pace segments in the later runs

Threshold sessions: One tempo or threshold session each week

Speed: Shorter intervals early in the block

Race practice: A 10K four to six weeks out

Using Run Melbourne as a Marathon Tune-Up

If you’re running the Sydney Marathon in late August or the Melbourne Marathon in October, treat Run Melbourne as a serious race, not a training run. Race it properly, then use your time to set a realistic marathon goal. Keep the taper short — two or three easy days — and get straight back into your marathon build afterwards.

Clash watch: The Gold Coast Half Marathon is on 3 July 2027, just two weeks earlier. Racing both hard is possible for experienced runners, but most should pick one.

Training Through the Cold

Protect your key sessions. Cold, dark mornings make it easy to skip runs. Make your long run and threshold session non-negotiable.

Practise early starts. A few long runs at 6:30am will help your body adjust to race-morning timing.

Dress in layers. Start warm, finish comfortable.

Race Day

Wake early: with a 6:30am start, many runners will be up around 4:00-4:30am.

Eat a small breakfast 2-2.5 hours before the start.

Arrive by 5:30-6:00am: the event village opens at 5:30am.

Use public transport: road closures make driving difficult, and Melbourne’s trains and trams are the easiest option.

Bring a throwaway layer and gloves.

After the Race

Get warm quickly after you finish — winter post-race chills are real. Change into dry clothes, eat and drink, then take a few easy days before returning to training.

Log It While It’s Fresh

Write down your time, splits, the conditions, how the cold start affected you and how you paced the course. If Run Melbourne was a tune-up, record what your result means for your marathon goal while it’s still fresh.

🏅 Half in July, marathon in August?

RunningLog lets you plan Run Melbourne and your spring marathon in the same calendar, tag the marathon as your A-race and the half as a B-race, and compare your result with every half you’ve run before.

Start Your Free Race Log →

Is Run Melbourne Right for You?

It’s Great If You:

Want a flat, fast city half marathon in cool conditions

Are training for a spring marathon and need a tune-up

Like big-event atmosphere

Want to see Melbourne’s landmarks on foot

Consider Other Options If You:

Hate early starts and cold mornings

Prefer smaller, quieter races

Are already racing the Gold Coast Half two weeks earlier

Final Thoughts: Run Melbourne Half Marathon 2027

Run Melbourne is a winter race that rewards runners who put in the work through the cold, dark months. It’s flat, fast, packed with landmarks, and perfectly timed for anyone building toward a spring marathon.

Enter before 10 December 2026 for the best price, then train through autumn, practise those early starts, and get ready for a cold, dark — and potentially very fast — morning in Melbourne on 18 July 2027.

Running Run Melbourne in 2027, or have you raced it before?
