Not for a film shoot, not for a motorcade — for runners.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas is the only race in the world that shuts down Las Vegas Boulevard, and it does it after dark. You start at 4:30 in the afternoon as the desert cools, and by the time you’re a few miles in, the neon has taken over: the Bellagio fountains firing on your left, Resorts World’s enormous LED screen lighting up the sky, live bands stationed along the boulevard, and tens of thousands of people running down the most photographed street in America.

It is not a serious race in the traditional sense. It’s billed as the World’s Largest Running Party and it earns the description. But the course is genuinely flat and fast, February in Las Vegas is close to perfect running weather, and there’s nothing else like it anywhere.

The 2027 edition takes place over the weekend of February 20-21, 2027. Here’s what you need to know.

      🎰 Running Vegas in 2027?

Track it alongside your full race history. It was retired at the end of the 2010s, and the event has since reoriented entirely around shorter distances and the night-time party format.

What’s on offer in 2027:

Half Marathon (Sunday)

10K (Sunday)

5K (Saturday)

KiDS ROCK (youth event)

If you specifically want a marathon in Nevada or the Southwest, you’ll need to look elsewhere. If you want to run the Strip at night, this is the only game in town.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas 2027: Race Overview

Official Name: CELSIUS Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Las Vegas
Dates: Saturday-Sunday, February 20-21, 2027
Distances: Half Marathon, 10K (Sunday); 5K (Saturday); KiDS ROCK
Sunday Start Time: 4:30 PM for both the Half Marathon and 10K
Location: Las Vegas Boulevard (the Strip) and Downtown Las Vegas
Course: Flat and fast, on closed roads
Average Temperature: Around 65°F / 18°C
Airport: Harry Reid International (LAS), minutes from the Strip
Organizer: Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series (The IRONMAN Group)
Registration: Open now; no lottery, no qualifying time

The Weekend Format

Saturday: the 5K and the Fan Fest

Saturday belongs to Downtown. The 5K runs through the historic Fremont East district and finishes at the Fremont Street Experience beneath Slotzilla — the enormous slot-machine-shaped zipline structure that anchors the canopy.

Around it sits the Saturday Night Fan Fest at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, a block from the 5K finish: DJ battles, glow-in-the-dark game zones, live music, and a general refusal to treat a 5K as a small thing.

Sunday: the Half Marathon and 10K on the Strip

This is the main event. Both distances start at 4:30 PM, with runners gathering at the Start Line Festival before being called forward onto Las Vegas Boulevard.

Starting mid-afternoon means the first miles are run in daylight and the finish is under full neon — which is exactly the point. The transition from desert dusk to full Vegas glare happens while you’re running through it.

The Course

The half marathon runs the length of the Strip and out toward Downtown before returning, taking in a landmark roll-call that no other race can match:

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign

The Bellagio fountains

New York-New York and its rollercoaster

T-Mobile Arena

Resorts World’s 100,000-square-foot LED screen

The Fremont Street canopy in Downtown

Essentially every major resort marquee on the boulevard

Is it fast?

Genuinely, yes. The course is almost entirely flat on wide, well-paved road, and February temperatures around 65°F are close to ideal. If you can hold your pace through the sensory overload, a PR is realistic.

The caveats are worth knowing:

Crowding. This is a large field on a course with turns and pinch points. Expect congestion, particularly early.

The distraction factor. A meaningful percentage of the field is in costume, taking photographs, and treating the whole thing as a night out. That’s the charm, but it’s not conducive to focused racing.

The evening start. You’ll have been awake all day, which changes your fuelling entirely. More on that below.

Air quality. You’re running past a lot of open-air casino frontage. Some runners find it noticeable.

The Evening Start Changes Everything

This is the single biggest practical difference between Vegas and almost every other road race, and it’s where people come unstuck.

A 4:30 PM start means you’re not rolling out of bed and eating a bagel. You’ve been awake for eight or nine hours, you’re in a city designed to make you eat and drink badly, and your normal pre-race routine doesn’t apply.

What to do about it:

Practise it in training. Do at least one or two long runs at late-afternoon start times so you know how your body handles a full day of eating beforehand.

Plan your day’s meals deliberately. A normal breakfast, a proper lunch around 11 AM-12 PM, then a small, familiar snack roughly 90 minutes before the start.

Don’t graze all day. The temptation in Vegas is to treat the buffet as a carb-load. It isn’t.

Hydrate steadily from morning. Desert air is dry, casinos are air-conditioned, and you’ll lose more than you notice.

Stay off your feet. The other Vegas trap: eight hours of walking the Strip before running a half marathon. Sightsee after the race, not before.

Alcohol the night before is a genuinely bad idea. Obvious, routinely ignored.

Handle the day well and the evening start becomes an advantage — you’re properly fuelled and fully awake, rather than running on a piece of toast at 7 AM.

Registration

Registration for 2027 is open now, with no lottery and no qualifying time — it’s a straightforward online sign-up at RunRocknRoll.com, with tiered pricing that rises as the event approaches. Early bird pricing is limited.

Important: registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable. Factor that in before committing.

If you miss online registration, in-person sign-up has historically been available at the Health & Fitness Expo during race week.

The Remix Challenge

Run the Saturday 5K and either the Sunday Half Marathon or 10K and you receive a third medal — the Remix Challenge Medal — on top of both finisher medals. You’re enrolled automatically when you register for both, and you collect the extra medal at the Remix Medal Tent in the Finish Line Festival.

Three medals for a weekend’s work is, admittedly, very much in keeping with the spirit of the event.

Running for charity

St. Jude Heroes offers free entry in exchange for a fundraising commitment supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, including a Heroes singlet, charity medal, and dedicated hospitality.

Bib Collection and the Expo

All runners must collect their own bib, shirt, and gear check bag in person at the Health & Fitness Expo in the days before the race. There’s no race-day collection and nothing is mailed out.

Build this into your trip planning — if you’re flying in late on the Saturday for a Sunday race, check the expo’s closing time carefully before you book.

The Entertainment

The Rock ‘n’ Roll series is built around on-course music, and Vegas is the flagship. Expect themed stages along the route with live bands and DJs, plus:

The Start Line and Finish Line Festivals

Saturday Night Fan Fest at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center

Official afterparties — recent editions have included private runner takeovers of Strip nightclubs

On-course weddings — a long-running Vegas tradition where couples get married mid-race. Yes, really.

Costumes everywhere. Elvis is not optional so much as inevitable.

Logistics

Getting there

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) sits minutes from the Strip and is served by essentially every major US carrier plus a growing list of international routes. Few destination races are this easy to reach.

Where to stay

Las Vegas has more hotel rooms than almost any city on earth, so availability is rarely the problem. Location is.

Mid-Strip (Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Cosmopolitan, Paris) puts you closest to the start area and simplifies race day considerably.

North Strip (Resorts World, Fontainebleau, Wynn) works well and often offers race-weekend deals.

Downtown is convenient for the Saturday 5K and Fan Fest but further from Sunday’s start.

Whatever you book, note that Las Vegas Boulevard closes for the race — walking distance matters far more than driving distance on Sunday evening.

Race-day movement

Road closures on the Strip are extensive and rideshare pickup zones get chaotic. Staying somewhere you can walk to the start and back from the finish is worth paying a little extra for.

Is This Race For You?

Great choice if you:

Want an experience race rather than a time trial

Are travelling with a group of mixed abilities — three distances, all in one weekend

Like the idea of a flat, cool-weather half with genuine PR potential

Enjoy costumes, music, and general spectacle

Want an easy destination race with minimal travel friction

Are chasing medals — the Remix Challenge delivers three

Look elsewhere if you:

Want a marathon — this event no longer offers one

Need a quiet, uncrowded race

Can’t adapt your routine to an evening start

Want refund or transfer flexibility

Find the Vegas environment more draining than energising

Making a Weekend of It

You’ll have seen the Strip at its most theatrical from the middle of the road, which is a hard act to follow. Some worthwhile additions:

The Neon Museum — the boneyard of retired Vegas signs, best visited after dark

Red Rock Canyon — about 30 minutes out, and a genuinely beautiful contrast to the boulevard

Hoover Dam — under an hour away

Fremont Street — you’ll have run through it, but it rewards a slower look

The food — Vegas has quietly become one of America’s better restaurant cities

The Bottom Line

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas doesn’t pretend to be a purist’s race, and it’s better for the honesty. It’s a flat, fast half marathon wrapped inside a street party, run on the one night a year the Strip belongs to runners.

Come with the right expectations — plan your eating around the evening start, stay off your feet during the day, and accept that you’ll be sharing the road with several thousand people in wigs — and it’s one of the most purely enjoyable nights in American road running.

The 2027 CELSIUS Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas takes place February 20-21, 2027. Registration is open now, with no lottery and no qualifying standard. Just remember: it’s a half marathon, not a marathon.

Ready to add Vegas to your race history? Track your goals and results at RunningLog — every race, every distance, every story worth keeping.

Have you run the Strip at Night?
